Sensory Processing Treatments at School & Home provide information on foundational knowledge by teaching the definition of sensory processing skills. This includes providing a information and examples on sensory self-regulation and interventions to incorporate daily at home and school when performing task. The course instructor discusses the distinct contribution of occupational therapy with sensory processing skills to connect a current day perspective to treatment.
A reflective component to the course is available to facilitate the learners’ ability to integrate material into daily awareness and practice. This is completed after the initial activity by engaging learners in reflective practices related to utilizing the new knowledge and skills with a child.

Participants will learn introductory information about sensory processing skills. The link between the central nervous system and how sensory information is received is discussed. The peripheral nervous system will be presented for an understanding of sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) responses which result in behavioral outburst, meltdowns, tantrums, screaming, and running. Functional strategies to promote sensory calming activities at home and school are presented.

Dr. Harriett Lachelle Walker-Dumas, OTD, OTR/L, ASDCS, CMT, CNMT is the founder and executive director of Discovery Therapy Network, a non-profit organization. Our mission is to provide education and services on therapeutic advancements to empower students, educators, administrators, parents, and professionals. Our focus is helping children diagnosed with Autism and other special needs to learn new skills. We provide school improvement programs, school-based therapy services, professional training, on-site workshops, webinars, educational opportunities, teletherapy consultations/services, and parent training.
As a pediatric occupational therapist with over 28 years of experience, her passion is increasing outcomes and professional knowledge with professionals, parents and children. She has directed and co-coordinated camps for children with special needs for seven years. Previously, Dr. Walker-Dumas has owned and operated three pediatric therapy facilities, provided school based contracting services, Authored the Wonder Paper – Handwriting Development System, and patented The Upper Extremity Stroke Apparatus. Dr. Walker-Dumas recognizes the potential in children’s abilities and strives for optimal achievement of their highest functional skill levels.
